A novel covert channel attack known as CASPER has been developed by researchers at Korea University’s School of Cyber Security. It can leak data from air-gapped PCs to a nearby smartphone at a rate of 20 bits per second. The receiving microphone could be in a laptop in the same room or a smartphone in the attacker’s pocket that is capturing sound. The CASPER attack uses the internal speakers of the target computer as the data transmission channel to send binary or Morse code to a microphone up to 1.5 metres away while also transmitting high-frequency sounds that the human ear is unable to hear.
