DARPA Aims to Ditch C Code, Move to Rust

13-August-24

DARPA has launched the TRACTOR program to develop an automated system for translating C code into secure, idiomatic Rust code. The initiative aims to address memory-safety vulnerabilities common in C by converting legacy codebases to Rust, a language designed to prevent such issues. The program will involve a workshop on August 26, where academic and industry teams will compete to create the translation system. While AI and large language models (LLMs) are expected to play a role, the project faces challenges, including integrating evolving AI technologies and addressing intellectual property concerns. The ultimate goal is to enhance software security and streamline the transition from C to Rust.
