A data protection bill that seeks to better regulate big tech firms and penalize companies for data breaches was adopted by Indian MPs on Wednesday amid concerns from a number of organizations regarding the rights of citizens to privacy. According to Information Technology and Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the legislation will restrict cross-border data transmission and give a framework for the establishment of a data protection authority to oversee compliance from tech corporations.
In a nation where digital freedoms have been declining since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office in 2014, a number of opposition lawmakers and digital experts claim the legislation would permit the government and its agencies to access user data from businesses and personal data of individuals without their consent as well as collect private data.
