DHS cyber review board to examine China-linked cyberattacks of Microsoft

The next examination into cloud security by the Department of Homeland Security’s Cyber Safety Review Board will look at a recent breach that targeted government email accounts provided by Microsoft software. The review board will look into how threat actors target cloud computing systems for illicit purposes. The review board is made up of 15 cybersecurity leaders from the public and private sectors.
A senior official from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency described the cyberattack at the time as a “surgical campaign” that targeted a “small number of mailboxes.” The review will also evaluate how a hacking group allegedly connected to China used a vulnerability in Microsoft Exchange Online to gain access to unclassified government emails. Cloud security has been referred to as “the backbone of some of our most critical systems” by DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
