On Monday, the Irish Data Protection Commissioner was instructed by the European Data Protection Board to limit the use of customers’ personal data by Facebook and Instagram for ad personalization within the next two weeks. Dublin serves as Meta’s European headquarters, granting the Irish agency jurisdiction over the business throughout Europe.
According to a representative for Meta, the company will move to a new legal basis for data processing under the General Data Protection Regulation, the comprehensive privacy law of Europe, and does not fear a “blanket ban” on the use of personal data. Additionally, this week, Meta launched premium subscriptions for Instagram and Meta users to utilize without advertisements.
