FBI warns energy sector of likely increase in targeting by Chinese, Russian hackers

The FBI cautions that Chinese and Russian hackers will likely attack the energy sector more frequently. According to an FBI letter made to the energy industry and acquired by Recorded Future News, changes in the world’s energy supply will probably lead to an increase in the number of Chinese and Russian hackers attacking crucial energy infrastructure.



The alert, released on Thursday, lists several contributing causes, including rising LNG exports from the United States, shifts in the global crude oil supply chain favoring the United States, continued Western pressure on Russia’s energy supply, and China’s reliance on imported oil. The alert does not specifically mention any advanced persistent threat (APT) hacking organizations linked to China or Russia, nor does it make mention of any cybersecurity events involving critical infrastructure.
