Google Messages Getting Cross-Platform End-to-End Encryption with MLS Protocol

Google has declared that it will open source an implementation of the Message Layer Security (MLS) protocol and offer support for it to its Messages service for Android. The change occurs at the same time that the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) released RFC 9420, the core specification of the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol, as a Request for Comments.
Giles Hogben, privacy engineering director at Google, stated that although end-to-end encryption is supported by the majority of contemporary consumer messaging services (including Google Messages), users are now only able to communicate with contacts who also use that platform. “For this reason, Google strongly supports regulatory initiatives that call for interoperability for substantial end-to-end messaging platforms.”
