Here's How Fast Ransomware Encrypts Files

The information came from Splunk’s SURGe team, which tested how rapidly the 10 most common ransomware strains - Lockbit, REvil, Blackmatter, Conti, Ryuk, Avaddon, Babuk, Darkside, Maize, and Mespinoza - could encrypt 100,000 files totaling 53.93 gigabytes of data in their lab. With speeds 86 percent quicker than the median, Lockbit won the race. One Lockbit sample was capable of encrypting 25,000 files in a single minute.

The Splunk team discovered that ransomware variations vary greatly in terms of encryption performance, and that the underlying technology can influence this.
