Microsoft announces new Windows 'checkpoint' cumulative updates

16-July-24

Microsoft will introduce checkpoint cumulative updates for Windows Server 2025 and Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, delivering security fixes and new features through smaller, incremental differentials. This approach aims to save users bandwidth, hard drive space, and installation time. The updates will be automatically received without requiring user action. Microsoft plans to periodically release cumulative updates as checkpoints, with subsequent updates consisting of incremental binary differentials against the last checkpoint. Admins managing updates via Windows Update, Windows Update for Business, Windows Autopatch, or WSUS will see no changes in their processes. Users can preview this feature in the Insider Dev Channel with Windows Insider Preview Build 26120.1252, following Microsoft’s discontinuation of Windows 10 Delta and Express updates in 2019.
