Microsoft confirmed that the eight-hour Azure outage was caused by a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, which was worsened by an error in their defense implementation. The attack flooded Azure services with internet traffic, impacting Azure Front Door and Azure Content Delivery Network components, leading to errors, timeouts, and latency spikes. While most issues were mitigated within two-and-a-half hours, full restoration took until 20:48 UTC. The hacktivist group “SN_blackmeta” claimed responsibility, though the attacker is not confirmed. The outage affected a range of services, including Azure App Services and Microsoft 365, causing disruptions for many organizations. Microsoft apologized and plans to release detailed post-incident reviews.
