Nation-state hackers from Russia, North Korea, Iran, and China are incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) in their cyber attack operations, exploiting AI services provided by Microsoft and OpenAI. While no significant attacks leveraging LLMs have been observed, state-affiliated actors have explored AI technologies in various phases of the attack chain, such as reconnaissance and malware development. Microsoft and OpenAI have disrupted these efforts and are developing principles to address the malicious use of AI tools by nation-state actors, emphasizing identification, collaboration, and transparency.
