OVHcloud blames record-breaking DDoS attack on MikroTik botnet

03-July-24

OVHcloud, a leading European cloud services provider, mitigated a record-breaking distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack in April 2024, reaching an unprecedented 840 million packets per second (Mpps). This attack, originating from compromised MikroTik devices, surpassed the previous record of 809 Mpps and highlighted a trend of increasing attack sizes, with some exceeding 1 Tbps becoming frequent in 2024. OVHcloud identified vulnerable MikroTik models, specifically CCR1036-8G-2S+ and CCR1072-1G-8S+, as primary sources due to their high performance and outdated firmware. Despite warnings, many MikroTik devices remain susceptible, posing significant DDoS risks. The firm also reported the highest bit rate attack of 2.5 Tbps in May 2024 and continues to address these escalating threats.
