Researchers Extract Sounds From Still Images on Smartphone Cameras

An approach of extracting noises from still images taken with smartphone cameras equipped with rolling shutter and adjustable lens components has been developed by a team of academic researchers. According to the researchers, these smartphone cameras enable “point-of-view (POV) optical-acoustic side channels for acoustic eavesdropping” that don’t require a line of sight or an item to be in the camera’s field of view.

The rolling shutters and moving lenses for optical image stabilization (OIS) and auto focus (AF) on complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) cameras produce sounds that are modulated into images as subtle distortions.
